Currently SJS has the following programs in action: a. Monitoring and voicing against press freedom violations Somalia is among the most volatile countries on earth. Journalists are regarded among the victims of the civil unrest in the country. They are arrested, harassed, threatened, or killed while performing their professional duties. On several occasions, media outlets have been closed down without prior notice or court warrant. Therefore, SJS works as the watchdog of press freedom violations in the country. b. Raising public awareness Through its member organizations, SJS takes its role in raising the awareness of the public with proper messages. SJS's current core areas of concern are peace promotion, working for a democratic Somalia, reaching economic self-sufficiency, and most importantly, against the fatal diseases such as HIV/AIDS. c. Researching the local media environment The Somali media has experienced a complete change since the fall of the military regime in 1991. For the first time in the history of Somalia, private media organizations have been established throughout the country.
However, we would like to research on the current challenges faced by the
local media and explore how best they may utilize the latest technology
accessible within Somalia. |
